Someone is finally making a movie about the late horse-god Secretariat! This thrills the hell out of me because I had the honor of seeing Secretariat after he was retired. My family was moving from New York to California (a bizarre experience I need to write about) when we stopped near a horse farm to take a break. I was ten years old at the time and horse-crazy.
I walked over to a white fence that ran the length of a green pasture. A huge chestnut horse grazed alone. While day-dreaming about owning such a magnificent animal I happened to glance at a brass plate on the fence. It read "Stud pasture, Secretariat". I uttered my first bad word as I stared at the horse. The horse that shattered the competition with a 31-length victory at the Belmont ate plain grass like any other horse! If he could have given me his autograph I would have asked for it.
I'm happy. Now if only someone would make a good film about Lord Nelson.
